Up: Game 1  Up: Game 1 Outline

A rather odd twist

As you awaken, the first think you notice is that you're cramped. The second thing you notice is that your vision is murky, as though you're underwater. The third thing is that you can hear voices in the background. Indistinguishable at first, but then they become clearer.

"Look, she's waking up!" One of them cries.

"So soon?" asks another, "She wasn't supposed to wake up yet!"

"Whatever, just go on with the procedure!" a third one orders.

As your mind starts to focus, you are able to discern a few things you couldn't before. First, you're still a girl, but you seem to have aged a bit, as you now seem to be somewhere between 2 and 3 years old. Second, the reason you're cramped is because you're inside a glass tube of sorts, suspended in a murky liquid. Before you can try to figure out what's going on, you hear a draining sound and the liquid is flushed from your tube, lowering you gently to sit on the bottom. You can now see clearly, the tube is in a lab of sorts, and there are several scientists rushing about. The tube lowers, exposing you to them, and they all turn to look at you, as though expecting something.

"What?" you ask. Your voice is a bit hoarse, yet beneath that it is soft and cute (and definitely female, you think to yourself), yet you are surprised you can speak at all.

One of the scientists, a thin, balding man with glasses, steps forward. "Well my dear, it's just that we weren't expecting you to awaken so soon."

You cough a bit. "Wha-What do you mean?" you ask.

"You see," he says, pausing as though trying to find the right way to put it, "you were created, here in this lab, by myself and my team." He gestures to the other scientists. "We built your entire genetic structure from scratch and used that to grow an embryo. We incubated that embryo until it grew into a full human child. That child, is you."

"But...why?" you ask, too exhausted to do much else.

"Well for one, to prove it could be done. And also, we were also attempting to build an enhanced human specimen, who would have certain...abilities, the reason for which I won't go into detail about at the moment." The scientist continues to talk, saying various things about his project --you-- that really have little to no real significance (at least, you think so). He refers to you as "Crystal" several times, and when you ask him about it, he explains that "Crystal" is what the team agreed to name you. You know that attempting to tell him what you had just experienced would be futile, so you decide to just go along with it. Eventually the scientist explains the "abilities" he had mentioned earlier. He explains that you have been engineered to have the ability of hydrokinesis - the ability to control water. He says that his team will help you to learn and master this ability as well as acting as your caretakers, ending by saying that you will most certainly need this ability later in life.
