And So, to Bed

You are much too tired to figure this out, so you make no haste in going to bed. You sleep reasonably well, and when the morning comes, everything is back to normal. The sunlight streaming in through the window accentuates the smoothness of your hands, and a quick check reassures you that your entire body is as it ought to be. You have breakfast and go to work, not remembering until your lunch hour that had been a wolf downstairs when you went to bed. At least, you think that there was. You don't really want there to have been, so you brush it off as fantasy.

Wednesday is your poker night, so at seven o'clock, you meet the guys at Mark's house with beer and mixed nuts in tow. You like bringing the refreshments because you don't mind splurging on the good stuff once in a while. After all, you're one of the ones who will be drinking it.

You win the first couple of hands and are pleased as punch. When you reach for your winnings, though, Raymond stops you. "Good grief," he says, "what's wrong with your hands?" To your surprise, the auburn fur has returned and is thickening ... it's everywhere from your fingertips to the exposed parts of your wrists. Moreover, your fingernails are longer and yellower than you recall them to have been this morning. You stammer, unable to provide an explanation.

"Relax," Owen directs you, rising and rolling up his sleeves. "I've been doing the same thing for years," he brags, just as fur appears on his arms and hands. Everyone applauds, and he blushes a deep crimson.
