A ready-money transaction

Your attempts to comfort Koko are futile. He continues to weep, disconsolate, for a few more minutes. Suddenly, he jumps up, and shouts:

"Of course! I can't execute her, so I'm under no obligation to do so! She never committed a crime!"

The portly man slowly turns to Koko and says, "She volunteered. That's suicide. Suicide is a capital offense. Therefore, you must behead her." Koko falls down on the ground again, weeping. "You're right, Pooh-Bah, you're right." Suddenly, he jumps up again, (this rapid rising and falling has probably damaged his brain by now) and shouts:

"Are you so SURE about that? If we forged an affidavit stating that the execution had taken place, we could avoid performing it at all!"

Koko calms down. "Pooh-Bah, you would have to act as witness." Pooh-Bah replies, "I would have to be grossly insulted with a sizeable bribe." Koko hands over a pouch of coins, which Pooh-Bah weighs in his hand. Pooh-Bah then pulls out a small scroll and writes several different signatures on it. He hands it to Koko, who pockets it.

Suddenly, a gong rings. "The Mikado has arrived!" Koko quickly turns to Pitti-Sing. "Quick! Hide!" "But..." "Nothing of the sort! If he finds you alive, I will have the greatest difficulty in convincing him that I have decapitated you." He gestures nervously in your direction, and speaks in a whisper. "Hide her! Anywhere!"
