Company

Suddenly, your heart nearly stops as someone yells in your ear, "So, what are you in for?" You seem to leap a foot in the air before twisting around to see where the voice came from. You see a dragon of equal proportions to your own lying against a thick tree. From the looks of it, he is relaxing there. His scales are a deep scarlet, with a bulging belly that is of a slightly lighter hue. "Where am I?", you stammer.

"No idea", he responds. "A lab of some sort, I think, or possibly a zoo." He leans back and closes his eyes as if sunbathing. "Who are you?" you ask. "Peter Riven. Let me guess, you suddenly woke up and you were a dragon, right?"

"How did you know?" you ask. "Happened to every one of us here. We all find something strange and wake up dragons. 'Course, word around here is that we went into some sort of hibernation and woke up years in the future, but like it makes a difference now." You slowly roll onto your belly and begin dragging yourself away from 'Peter' as it were. The sound of defeat in his voice... his laid-back attitude... they make you feel uneasy in this new environment. Suddenly, you see a slightly smaller dragon of a topaz color running toward the fence, and you hear him panting, "I can make it, I can make it". He flaps his wings frantically, but you see he is weighted down by a bulging belly, reminding you painfully of your own experience with weighted take offs.

"Give it up, Squeaks, you know you can't make it!", you hear Peter yell. He's proven right as the smaller dragon collides with the fence. There is a short ZAP, and the dragon falls back... you could almost swear you saw hair standing on end. "Is he ok?", you ask. "Just ignore him, he tries it every week." You glance at the similarities between the three of you. "At least I don't have to worry about going hungry", you think aloud. Peter glances at you. "Yeah, right. The stuff they feed you is low grade, not very fresh. Then there's the stuff they put in it... terrible."

"What stuff?" you ask. "They mix something into the food and water around here; their way of keeping us on the ground. My advice is to keep yourself starved or you'll end up like Melvin." "Who's Melvin?" you ask, almost fearful of the answer. "One of the first, too big to move", he chuckles evilly. "Sort of funny really."

Meanwhile, the smaller dragon waddles slowly up, looking dizzy. You swear you can see smoke rising from his skin. "Did I make it?" he asks. You can see why he is called Squeaks, as his voice seems high-pitched for a dragon. "Sorry", you say, just before the dragon passes out in front of you...
