The machine

Walking through the aisles, you eventually come across a large set of scales, embedded into an even bigger machine. The contraption hums softly, and as you get closer, you can feel the vibrations through your feet. You ascend the short flight of stairs to reach the scales themselves, and find a sort of computer console, with various different-sized buttons: Weigh, Alter, Backup, and Reset. In addition, there is also a number pad to the side and a large electronic display.

You hit "weigh", and the machine displays your current weight - 60kg. Well, that was to be expected - you wonder what the other buttons do?
