Accept it...

You sigh, ears drooping and tail dragging. "I guess I have to live with this, huh?" you ask.

"I'm afraid so," the doctor agrees. "As I said, I'm terribly sorry about what happened, and I'll be happy to help you adjust in any way I can. You just need to let me know. I don't know what sort of paperwork will need to be filled out here, but if you need a witness to events or anything else, give me a call."

You manage a half-smile. "Thanks," you say, "but I think my dad can pull some strings and save you the trouble."

"Well," he says, "if there's anything at all, let me know."

You sigh wistfully, then head out the door. You make it home without much incident, and flop down on your bed. You manage to keep yourself from crying, but it's not easy. When you've regained some of your composure, you pick up the phone and dial your dad.

"Dad?" you ask when he answers. "It's me."

He sounds confused. "Me who?"

"Your son," you say. "Well, sort of, anyway."

"Listen, miss," he says, "I think you must have a wrong number."

"No, no, no, dad," you yelp, "don't hang up! It is me. I just...well...um..." You frantically search for a delicate way to put it before finally bursting out with, "I'm a girl."

Your dad sounds confused. "What?" he asks. Choking back tears, you explain the situation. He sighs.

"I wouldn't believe this," he says, "but only you and your mother have this number. I...it still sounds insane, but I know you better than to think you'd contact me while I'm on a mission for prank purposes. You really are a...a cat-girl?"

"Yes," you say.

"Well," he says, "I guess if you're really stuck this way we'll just have to live with it. I want you to know that your mother and I still love you whether you're our son or our daughter."

"Thanks, dad," you half-smile.

"Give me a couple days and I'll get your paperwork altered," he says. "Just try to keep a low profile until your mother and I get back and we can help you adjust. Okay?"

"Okay," you say, your half-smile now a full one as you are overwhelmed with gratitude for parents that love you so much. After your dad hangs up, you lie on the bed for a while longer, then head down to the kitchen, eat a light supper, and watch old 50s monster movies until you fall asleep.
