Transitional Dialogue

Fred faces away from you before answering. "Darned if I know," he peeps.

A long, uncomfortable silence fills the room. At last, you muster the courage to ask Fred about a wild idea of yours. "Fred," you ask, "would you agree that we both have nothing to lose at this point?"

Fred stiffens. "No, I wouldn't," he asserts. "I don't give up quite that easily."

You cannot help but smile at his resolve. "Perhaps I should rephrase my question," you offer. "Do you think that it would be worth my while to investigate any possible cure for my condition?" you ask.

Fred stares you right in the eye. "What exactly do you have in mind?" he inquires.
